Dr Billy van Uitregt
Ngā Rauru, Te Ātihaunui -a- Pāpārangi, Ngai Tuhoe, Dutch
Senior Lecturer in Environmental Studies at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington
Billy’s research and teaching centres on the structures of power and privilege that exist when environmental science, policy and governance seeks to “integrate” Māori and other Indigenous voices, knowledges and worldviews in contemporary approaches to environmental management. This is not to diminish the hard fought approaches that have been negotiated by Indigenous peoples, but to continually think about what next steps are needed to embed a truly relational understanding of our connection to the natural world in our management systems.
